Philosophy/Political Science : Instructor

Office: L-301A on the Mount Vernon campus

Phone: (360) 416.3376

Dr. Farhana Loonat is a South African Indian food fiend. When she is not doing the bidding of her cat-boss Miss Googli Loonat she is watching South Park, cooking up large pots of biryani, frying mountains of pakoras and swilling pints of mango lassie. Her office is a popular hangout for students. More importantly, it is a safe space for students of all genders, races, religious beliefs (or lack of them!), sexual orientations, physical and cognitive disabilities and those who are neuro-divergent. Dr. Loonat is a high-spirited feminist philosopher and political scientist who is passionate about social justice and who infuses that passion into students who take her introductory courses in Philosophy, Ethics, Political Science, American Government, International Relations and Comparative Government. Dr. Loonat holds a masters degree in Philosophy from the University of Virginia, a certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies from Vanderbilt University as well as a Ph.D. in Political Science, also from Vanderbilt University. A former Fulbright scholar and International Peace Scholarship recipient, Dr. Loonat’s research interests are in gender-based violence and the implications these have for human agency. She awaits your visit to her office, where she will make you tea from what must surely be the single largest assortment of teas in the Pacific Northwest :)
