Happy New Year and Welcome to Skagit Valley College! I hope you had a refreshing Winter break and are ready for more mathematical challenges this quarter.

I had some fun times this summer visiting with family, hiking, boating, swimming, and unfortunately lots of painting and wood stacking. The picture above is of Mt. Challenger in the the North Cascades National Park. I did a six day backpacking trip there with my sister Karla hiking 55 miles. We had to hike out of our camp at Tapto Lakes at midnight because we were tired of the wind blowing the tent poles into our heads. It was a beautiful moonlit trek.

I'm looking forward to working with you and your mathematics questions this quarter. I'm available to help students this quarter when my office door is open and also during the times I will be staffing the Math Center. Please drop in and bring your questions. Don't be a stranger. I want to help you to be successful in mathematics and in your career and life goals. Also, watch for Study Sessions I will be holding this quarter, come in and get extra help - free!.

**Open face Poker:**

A game of poker is being played between two people. The deck of cards is spread out face up in front of both of them. The first player goes first and selects 5 cards. The second player goes next and selects 5 cards. Next they each get to replace anywhere from 1 to all 5 cards in their hand on the next round. After this second round of selection the winner is determined.

What hand should player one select at the start in order to guarantee a victory?
