TWO weeks until graduation! Not that I'm counting, but I sure enjoy summertime. Last summer I had some fun times visiting with family, hiking, boating, swimming, and unfortunately lots of painting and wood stacking. The picture above is of Mt. Challenger in the the North Cascades National Park. I did a six day backpacking trip there with my sister Karla hiking 55 miles. We had to hike out of our camp at Tapto Lakes at midnight because we were tired of the wind blowing the tent poles into our heads. It was a beautiful moonlit trek.

I'm looking forward to working with you and your mathematics questions this quarter. I'm available to help students this quarter when my office door is open. Please drop in and bring your questions. Don't be a stranger. I want to help you to be successful in mathematics and in your career and life goals.

Spring Quarter Office Hour is 8:30AM daily or by appointment

10:30- 12:20 Accelerated Algebra, Math 98/99

** Math 98 - Online :** A MyMathLab access code/kit is required for the class. The Math 98 text is available online with the code, a paper copy of the book is optional. Text: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra - Functions and Authentic Applications 2e, Jay Lehmann. (Buyer Beware: If you purchase an access code online the code number must not have been previously used or it will not work. Purchasing from Pearson directly at MyMathLab registration is safe and is approximately $100) If you don't have the money right now, you can always log into the course with a temporary 14-day access in order to get started immediately.

** Math 151 - Differential Calculus:** The text adopted for the course is Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 5th Edition, James Stewart, This is an older edition which you should purchase online in advance of the quarter. The used versions are about $2.00 plus shipping.

**Open face Poker:**

A game of poker is being played between two people. The deck of cards is spread out face up in front of both of them. The first player goes first and selects 5 cards. The second player goes next and selects 5 cards. Next they each get to replace anywhere from 1 to all 5 cards in their hand on the next round. After this second round of selection the winner is determined.

What hand should player one select at the start in order to guarantee a victory? (Assuming all suits are equal)
