Fall Quarter Mathematics...Here we go!

Hope you had a wonderful summer and got to enjoy some of the spectacular weather we had this year.  My husband and I as well as our two malamutes did a few fun backpacks and some great relaxing.  I'm excited about this fresh Fall start and look forward to working with you to help you with your mathematics.  As long as my office door is open you are welcome to stop by for help or to chat.  Hopefully our calculus sequence this year will be able to have the chance to use Mathematica to explore calculus topics and concepts.  I'm just learning the new software myself, but look forward to solving some interesting problems together.

Texts for Fall Quarter 2009:

CALCULUS TEXT OPTIONS for 2009 (Math 151,152,153)

Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions 4th Edition - Larson/Hostetler/Edwards (ISBN-10: 0618606246)
Other Options you may consider:
   1)  For students that only need two quarters of Calculus a shortened version covering only chapters 1-10 is available:  Calculus of a Single Variable: Early Transcendental Functions 4th Edition.  This text is a bit smaller and cheaper.
    2)  For students that don't mind a slightly different text and are willing to check in with the instructor text once in awhile, you could purchase:
Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions 3rd Edition - Larson/Hostetler/Edwards  for considerable savings.

The Calculus Student Solutions Manual can be accessed online for FREE at  http://www.calcchat.com/.

A Problem to Keep You Busy:

Insta-Lawn:  A guy goes to a nursery to find a way to get his dirt yard to become a nice green lawn in one month.  The nursery salesperson says, "We have this plug of grass that will do the trick.  Just plant it in a central location and every day it will double the size of your lawn."  The nursery guy calculates that one plug will be sufficient to do the job in one month.

The homeowner decides to buy two plugs instead... just to be on the safe side.

If one plug will fill the lawn in 30 days, how quickly will two plugs do the job?
