Dare to begin!

Welcome

Everything begins with a decision to try and a willingness to begin.  So, be okay with beginning!

About Me

I teach English classes that focus on writing, reading, and improving your study skills. I enjoy teaching. I've taught for 20+ years as an adjunct instructor and have worked for social service organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters and Citizens Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse.  I graduated with a Master of Science degree in Education from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Whitman College.

How to Contact Me

The best way to contact me if you're in one of my classes is to send me an email through Canvas.  If you aren't a student yet, you can email me at penny.perka@skagit.edu     You can also reach me during the quarter on Wednesday mornings 10-11 a.m. via a Zoom link posted in your Canvas class.

Overview of My Classes

My classes are asynchronous and online. Asynchronous and online means you do not show up for a class at a specific time or on a specific day or in a physical classroom. This doesn't mean you can put off doing classwork or not log in for a week and pass the class.

  • There are weekly due dates for assignments, so you need to log into Canvas every week to read, write, and complete work.
  • Many assignments are due on Sunday evenings, but some assignments like discussion boards have discussion posts due early in the week. The next week's module starts on Mondays.
  • You are not required to purchase a textbook for any of my classes.  You will be required to check out a textbook from the SVC library.
  • You will need a laptop or desktop computer to successfully complete the courses that I teach. Only about 1/3 of the assignments can be completed using a mobile phone or tablet. You can check out a laptop and hotspot from the college library.

I look forward to meeting you and learning with you and your classmates.  Cordially, Penny
